Overview

The Smoking Crab and Seafood Co, nestled in Joplin, Missouri, is an inviting haven for seafood lovers seeking authentic Cajun flavors crafted with care. This modest yet cozy establishment, located at 712 W 20th St, offers a casual dining experience best suited for small groups or intimate outings, with both indoor seating and an outdoor patio that comes alive when the weather allows.

At its core, The Smoking Crab excels in delivering a diverse seafood menu that centers on fresh, flavorful dishes such as their famed catfish and various shellfish options. The kitchen showcases a fine balance between traditional Cajun spices and comforting, buttery sauces—ranging from garlic and herb to bold jalapeño butter—allowing each plate to cater to different palates. Their boiled shrimp pasta pairs perfectly cooked pasta with tender shrimp, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a more substantial yet seafood-forward meal.

The atmosphere is unpretentious, characterized by friendly staff who enrich the experience with attentive service and thoughtful touches, such as readily providing crab cracking tools and acknowledging veteran guests with discounts. This genuine hospitality complements the casual vibe, where orders are placed at the counter, encouraging diners to explore the menu beforehand for a smoother visit.

Portion sizes are generous, and the pricing reflects good value without compromising on quality—elements that resonate well with both local patrons and newcomers alike. While the indoor space is compact, the ample outdoor picnic seating accommodates larger groups and fosters a relaxed environment perfect for savoring seafood classics.

Not every dish lands perfectly; some guests have noted that the fried offerings occasionally come with overly salty breading and that crab cakes might contain more filler than lump crab. Yet, these minor critiques are overshadowed by the overall vibrant flavors and fresh ingredients that elevate each serving.

For those who enjoy a spectrum of seafood experiences—from succulent lobster tails accented with lemon pepper to richly seasoned fried fish and shrimp—the Smoking Crab and Seafood Co proves a remarkable destination. Whether you crave a simple boiled shrimp side or an adventurous dive into Cajun butter-drenched crab, this spot delivers a memorable culinary journey with a warm, welcoming spirit.

Ideal for seafood aficionados of all backgrounds, especially anyone eager to indulge in authentic southern seafood with a twist, The Smoking Crab and Seafood Co stands out as a must-visit on Joplin’s dining map.

This is a small restaurant so it can fill up quickly. There is a little patio area outside for seating too. Tables of 4 & 2 & they ask that you don't move tables so its best for very small groups. All orders are done at the counter so would recommend looking up the menu ahead of time. The food was good authentic Cajun & they have several different butter sauces to choose from if your meal has that. Spicy, garlic & herb etc. Catfish is their fish of choice & the have lobster too. Prices aren't bad & serving sizes are generous.

This place did not disappoint! I ordered the fish and fries, the flavors were delicious! My husband ordered the jr. sampler, with a garlic jalapeño butter, it was so full of flavor. The service was great as well! *I took the photo halfway through my meal* there were two more pieces of fish on my plate.

I have been so EXCITED to try this place! And we were NOT disappointed! We ate inside and it felt really nice, the staff was very friendly and even noticed my husband's veteran hat and gave him a discount for his service. We thought that was above and beyond. I got the cajun butter with my crab and shrimp special. He got the fried fish and shrimp. It was all AMAZING They gave me tools for the crab without having to ask, and checked on is often as well. 9/10 would come back again! The only small gripe is the plastic silverware

An order at the inside podium, or the outside window, casual dining place. The indoor space is small. There is a lot of picnic seating outside, weather allowing. We tried the fried part of the menu, ordering the Jumbo Fried Platter and the Crab Cakes special. The service was great! The atmosphere was fine for the kind of place it is. The food was hot when served. It was mostly delicious. The crab cakes were a disappointment. Much more cake than crab! The shrimp, fish, oysters and scallops were all cooked just fine, but the breading was too salty for our tastes. If some of the breading was taken off, then it was much better. We will return in order to try the boiled part of the menu. Then I will add to this review.

I truly can’t explain just how good this place is! As soon as we walked in the sweet girl at the register was very quick to help us figure out the menu / seasonings / butter, and etc. I was worried I wouldn’t be able to handle the Cajun so I was asking her questions, and she encouraged me to try it and said she thought I’d for sure be able to handle it. (Great news - she was right!) I’m a very white person that can’t handle spice so take it from me, the Cajun IS FANTASTIC and I highly recommend it! I got Cajun on all of my stuff, and my husband got Cajun on all of his stuff except the lobster tail. He got lemon & pepper on the lobster tail and it was incredible. As for their catfish, it was some of the best catfish I’ve ever had and I will DEFINITELY be coming back. 10/10 they’re incredible and you need to try them!! We tried their corn, lobster tail, fried shrimp, fries, crab, taters, catfish, pretty much a little bit of everything and it was all super good

So fire! Me and my girlfriend both got the Loud Pack and Shrimp and we ate way too fast but it was too good! I wasn’t sure about the yellow rice initially and boy was I wrong, it’s amazing. Everything is so flavorful and cooked perfectly. Will be back!

It's just so good!! The gumbo, the fried shrimp and chicken pasta, and the catfish it's all !! It's always busy (PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY ARE ONLY OPEN THURSDAY-SUNDAY), which by the way please reconsider because we waited from Sunday until Thursday again lol. It's consistent and the GUMBO PHENOMENAL AND ITS 14.99 and you get a crab leg there is a hidden crableg at the bottom so it's basically like a SEAFOOD TREASURE HUNT!! BOMB 10 OUT OF 10

Music plays in the dining room, They have gift cards available for various amounts. The food speaks for itself. The flavor is customized to your desired taste. Their Lobster Sampler is amazing. The loaded boil platter and the supreme platters can feed an army small or large. Pictures never due justice until you see it and tates it in person!
